What Valentine's Day Means to Us....

The origins of Valentine's Day seem a bit vague, too. There is a saint called Valentine that is supposed to protect lovers. Then there is cupid that comes to the aid of those in love. A crafty business woman in the late 18th century started wrapping little gifts to be given as a token of love and affection. Perhaps she started it all?

I sometimes wonder if Valentine's Day isn't just some big hype from companies that try to sell their products. Just like many "un-official" celebrations, perhaps Valentines Day has followed the same path.

This special day seems to be indoctrinated into us, even in preschool. Parents receive a letter one week prior to February 14th, that a little something special for this day is OK to bring. However, if parents decide to "do" the Valentine exchange, they must do so for all children, not just close friends. I assume that's to avoid hurt feeling. This means that parents run off to the store in the nick of time, purchase the little envelope (about 1" x 2") with a pre-printed message. Into the envelope goes a little heart (made from sugar), a sticker or something that preschoolers really like.

In elementary schools, the Valentine celebration becomes a little bit more elaborate. February 14th is a day of class parties. Older classes visit the younger ones and present little presents like books, pencils, drawing utensils. And of course, lots of Valentine candy. Parties are organized by room parents and almost always involve decorating heart-shaped sugar cookies with red sprinkles. Teacher are overwhelmed by the many loving gifts - children are so sweet when writing their cards and wishes. They just adore their teachers. Even the time prior to the "Day of Love" is filled with activities geared towards Valentine's Day. Children make many little art projects that they bring home on Valentine's Day for Mom. A gift for Mom made by a child is treasured by parents for years to come. I still wear the little necklace with a clay heart my child made for me.

By the time children reach middle school, Valentine's Day celebrations happen off campus. Girls present their girl friends with gifts. But boys are now "Yuk" and girls are "Ick".

Love begins to bloom in high school. By that time, boys are most certainly primed for Valentine's Day. That doesn't mean the go out and purchase elaborate gifts. Still incapable to show their emotions, they, nevertheless, send nice Valentine's Day greetings.

As an adult, men know that they are in the doghouse unless they produce something really special on February 14. And that's where we come into the picture. As to our Valentine Day party - my best friend usually has a little lunch. We'll do a gift exchange, have lunch with a scrumptious valentine chocolate dessert and sip champagne. We all dress up for the occasion: black and red. We'll add some humor and wear red socks with hearts - not on our feet, but maybe as a "necklace".
