Questions About Our Fresh Fruit Gift Baskets

    What are Comice Pears?

This French variety of pear was first propagated as Doyenne du Comice near Angers in the mid-1800s, and is ideally suited to the volcanic soils of the Hood River Valley.

The first red sports were discovered in the 1900's near Medford, Oregon. A "sport" is a naturally occurring transformation that develops occasionally on fruit trees. Comice appear in all sizes, but their shape is unique among varieties, having a rotund body with a very short, well-defined neck. They are most often green in color, and sometimes have a red blush-covering small to large areas of the skin surface.

The sweet buttery flesh of the Comice is a perfect match for cheese, but true Comice aficionados enjoy them perfectly ripened, and freshly sliced, if not spooned directly from a cut half. A large pear with a very juicy, melting flesh, Comice are the sweetest and juiciest of all varieties of pears and are a favorite in holiday gift boxes and baskets. For many pear lovers, Comice are the pinnacle of pears.

Comice Pears are in season from October through January.

    What are French d'Anjou Pears?

The French d'Anjou pear is a large white-fleshed pear with abundant juice and a sweet brisk flavor.

Anjou pears are thought to have originated in France, in the vicinity of Angers. Called Beurre d'Anjou, they were introduced to America in about 1842. The name has been shortened simply to "Anjou", and is sometimes pronounced to rhyme with "Banjo", though it it still properly listed by its original French name.

Unlike Royal Williams (or Bartletts), another familiar green pear variety that does change to yellow during ripening, Green Anjous will remain green even when fully ripe. Anjou pears have exceptional keeping qualities, but are best when sliced and eaten fresh.

French d'Anjou Pears are in season from October through June.

    What are Navel Oranges?

Navel oranges are considered by many to be the best oranges in the world for eating out of hand.

They are large to extra large, round to oval, and a deep yellow to orange color.

They have a meaty flesh, their thick pebbly rinds are easy to peel, the segments separate easily, and they have no seeds.

Navel Oranges are in season all year long.

    Questions About Chocolate

    Is Chocolate really a Aphrodisiac?

Chocolate is the traditional gift of love, ranking right up there with roses as the most romantic gift one can give. But is it really an aphrodisiac? There is some evidence that the answer might be yes. Chocolate contains three substances, caffeine, theobromine and phenyethylamine that might be related to this myth. Caffeine acts as a stimulant. Theobromine stimulates the heart muscle and the nervous system. And phenyethylamine is reputed to be a mood elevator and an anti-depressant.

The combination of these three substances, giving you extra energy, making your heart beat faster, making you a bit jumpy and slightly giddy....well, you can see how chocolate could be linked to love. In fact, Montezuma used to drink a frothy chocolate beverage before going to visit one of his wives. But before you go out to buy several cases of chocolate to ply your lover with tonight, remember that these substances show up only in small quantities in chocolate.
